The window in the lower west wall of the tower depicts Jesus raising the daughter of Jairus from the dead. There is an account of this in Mark, chapter five, verses twenty two to forty three, and also in Luke, chapter eight, verses forty nine to fifty six. When Jesus was in Capernaum, a leader in the synagogue called Jairus, begged him to heal his twelve year old daughter who is dying by laying his hands on her. While he is on the way a messenger from Jairus’ house says that it was too late as Jairus’ daughter had died, but Jesus said to Jairus, “Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole”. At Jairus’ house Jesus finds mourners wailing outside, Jesus tells them the girl was not dead but they laughed at him. Jesus asks that no one enters the house other than Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the girl.
The window illustrates the moment when, watched by two of the disciples and the girls parents, Jesus takes the girl by the hand and tells her to get up. Luke, chapter eight, verses fifty five and fifty six end the account thus “And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.”
